UUP is a Sanctuary Congregation

Rev. Aija Simpson-Newbury gives blessing at Sonoma County offices at the start of a hunger strike in support of a Sanctuary Ordinance for Sonoma County in August 2025.

UUP Acts as Sanctuary Congregation in Defense of Migrant Neighbors

In February 2025, UUP unanimously voted to become a Sanctuary Congregation and to join with other churches, along with community groups and labor organizations, in the Sanctuary Coalition of Sonoma County. There is a long and honored history in Unitarian Universalism of siding with love in the face of unjust laws, beginning with the movement to abolish slavery and participating in the Underground Railway, through the work of the Unitarian Service Committee in the early days of World War II to provide passage for threatened people out of Europe, continuing to the Civil Rights Movement, and Sanctuary efforts for Central American refugees in the 1980s. Since becoming a Sanctuary congregation, UUP has hosted trainings for legal observers to respond to ICE actions and has participated in ongoing work to organize support for the migrant community. We are an active member of the Coalition, participating in efforts to pass a Sanctuary ordinance for Sonoma County, and planning for defense of our migrant neighbors. Your participation is needed, so that our faith can find expression in the work of justice in today’s hurting world.

North Bay Rapid Response Network

The Rapid Response Network provides a way for people to respond to fear and anxiety in our community as a result of the increase in immigration enforcement, ICE raids and other attacks against our communities. The network provides a 24-hour hotline to immigrants facing a raid by federal immigration agents, dispatches trained legal observers to the raid location, provides legal defense to affected communities, and offers accompaniment to impacted people and families following a raid.
