Please join us to hear about this year’s General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations, which was held in late June in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Richard Greggory Johnson III and David Dodd attended virtually as delegates. Our third delegate, who attended in person, was Rosemary Dodd, who will be on her way across country to begin her internship year at the UU Society of Sacramento. Business items included a passionate conversation about proposed revisions to Article II of the UUA bylaws, encompassing Purposes and Principles. A business proposal to divest from fossil fuels and provide reparations also generated intense debate. Three Acts of Immediate Witness were adopted.

Rev. John Buehrens served as the sixth President of the UUA, 1993-2001. He retired as Senior Minister of the First UU Society of San Francisco in 2017. He is the author or co-author of seven books on liberal religion, most recently Conflagration: How the Transcendentalists Sparked the American Struggle for Racial, Gender, and Social Justice (Beacon Press, 2020). Copies will be available for sale and signing following the service.

]]> The 10 days that span from Rosh Hashanah (Sept. 29th) to Yom Kippur (Oct. 9) are collectively known as the Jewish High Holidays or the Days of Awe. This is a time of introspection, spiritual practice and community. This season welcomes reflection on relationships to self, others, and what is most sacred. It is a time of “returning to the land of one’s soul”. This morning we’ll honor and explore some of the spiritual teachings of the Days of Awe. Join us for this service of inquiry and celebration! 

Enjoy apples and honey with us after the service! Apples dipped in honey is a delicious way of lifting up hopes for a “sweet New Year”. Rosh Hashanah is considered the “head of the year”, the Jewish New Year.

Guest Minister: Rev. Dara Olandt, Assistant Minister at the UU Congregation of Santa Rosa. Rev. Olandt is a self-described “life-long UU of Jewish heritage.”

]]> Please join us Sunday, March 31 as we explore the divinity of Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest. Shabbat (the Sabbath) was first revealed in the Old Testament Bible Creation story in Genesis. In the book of Exodus, we read, “in six days, God made Heaven and Earth, and on the seventh day, God exhaled.” So we could say that all creation moves with the rhythm of the breath. The ancient rabbis taught that on the seventh day God created “menuchah,” translated as rest in the sense of healing stillness. So until the Sabbath, our biblical creation story was unfinished.

As with much of religious dogma, the rules around celebrating Shabbat became “overly legalistic or restrictive.”  In the spirit of celebration, Rabbi Zalman Schacter-Shalomi says “It’s about joy and the things that grow only in time. We need to remove the grimness from it, and as a beginning, say to ourselves, today I am going to pamper my soul.”

]]> Guest Speaker: Rev. Lehel Molnár

In 1568 the Edict of Torda proclamation in Transylvania was the first of its kind in history; the right for individuals to believe and worship according to their own understanding; for clergy to preach and teach the Gospel as they too, understood it. This is one of the cornerstones of our modern understanding of religious practice and belief.

Rev. Lehel Molnár serves as Archivist at the Unitarian Headquarters in Kolozsvár, Transylvania (Romania). He is charged with the restoration, conservation, organization, development and administration of the 450 year old Unitarian Archives. After finishing his Seminary training in 1995, he was appointed to this position as well as to the post of Assistant Minister at the First Church in Kolozsvár where he served for nearly two years. In November of 1999, he was ordained a Unitarian minister. This year he is taking advanced courses at Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, as the Balázs Scholar.
