On Labor Day weekend, we recall the summons: “Workers of the world, Unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains.” Rev. John will recount some of his own experiences “swinging on the chains,” as a young member of the United Mine Workers, serving in the Great Lakes merchant marine. The Undogmatics will help us join in a series of rousing labor songs.

Please join us for UUP’s Summer Hymn Sing featuring songs and arrangements by Jim Scott. Jim will be performing in concert the previous evening at UUP, and while he won’t be at our service, we will continue to celebrate him and his musical contributions to Unitarian Universalism.

Note: This will be an all-ages service.

Still Crazy After All These Years

Do we admit to ourselves we worry, have anxiety and fears about our children, the state of the world, wildfires, earthquakes, tsunamis? What keeps you up at night? Are you glued to your digital devices? What do you do to self-soothe, to unplug, to bring yourself down from what has become a constant state of anxiety for many of us? What is your “Bridge Over Troubled Water”? How do we get back to “Feelin’ Groovy”? Because we won’t live forever. “It’s all gonna fade” as the Still Crazy song says.

(Please note: On this Sunday, many members of the congregation will be away at our all-congregation retreat, but we always keep our doors open for worship at home in Petaluma for anyone who is not able to attend retreat, or for any visitors we might have.)

The Days Between: A Grateful Dead Service

Petaluma’s own Grateful Dead tribute band, Dead Again, will play acoustic selections from the Grateful Dead repertoire, and UUP member and eminent Grateful Dead scholar Mary Goodenough will speak. “The Days Between,” in the Deadhead world, is the period between the day of Jerry Garcia’s birth (August 1) and of his death (August 9). We will explore themes of birth, life, and death in this service.
