Please join us Sunday, March 31 as we explore the divinity of Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest. Shabbat (the Sabbath) was first revealed in the Old Testament Bible Creation story in Genesis. In the book of Exodus, we read, “in six days, God made Heaven and Earth, and on the seventh day, God exhaled.” So we could say that all creation moves with the rhythm of the breath. The ancient rabbis taught that on the seventh day God created “menuchah,” translated as rest in the sense of healing stillness. So until the Sabbath, our biblical creation story was unfinished.

As with much of religious dogma, the rules around celebrating Shabbat became “overly legalistic or restrictive.” In the spirit of celebration, Rabbi Zalman Schacter-Shalomi says “It’s about joy and the things that grow only in time. We need to remove the grimness from it, and as a beginning, say to ourselves, today I am going to pamper my soul.”

Minister: Rev.
