The Eighth Day of Creation: Part II, Giving Spiritual Practice a Second Thought
Worship Leaders: Meredith Guest & Jodi Boyle
Whether established by religious protocol or fashioned by an individual, spiritual practice takes many forms. Continuing with the theme of creation from August 15th, let us examine the elements of spiritual practice and consider that such a practice can be the means by which we gradually pry off the shackles of unconsciousness and, fully free, consciously create the selves and the world of our highest aspirations.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

The Eighth Day of Creation: Part I
Worship Leaders: Meredith Guest & Jodi Boyle
In Genesis, it says that on the sixth day, “God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Whether you believe we are created in the image of God or not, what is clear is that each of us is born with the inherent capacity – like God – to create. Expanding on the Judeo-Christian creation story, it’s as if we are now on the 8th day of creation, and this time we are the creators. Each thought we think, each word we speak, each action we take is an act of creation. Yet how conscious are we of this innate capacity and of what comes into being as a result of our thoughts, words and deeds? In the first of two messages, let’s examine our capacity and consciousness to create so that at the end of the day we too can survey that which we have wrought and, with The Creator, proclaim it good.

On the spectrum of personalities, some are prone to saving the world (from environmental damage, violence, hunger, ignorance, injustice, and apathy) while others savor it (the beautiful scenery, good company, fine food, good fun). For those inclined to save it, when looking around at the problems, it’s easy to lose faith in humanity and in ourselves. Perhaps there is a way to savor the world without just avoiding all the problems we face. Come hear a father and daughter of diverse religious persuasions explore this topic.

Worship Leaders Elisabeth Hathaway, Nancy Blake, Harriet Coyne, James Coyne
Listening deeply, and speaking deeply are worship. When we sit with ourselves, openly and with curiosity, and really listen to others with this same respect and reverence, we live a simple and profound practice, which builds a spiritual foundation for us as individuals and as a community. Join us today in a service styled on the Evensong Adult Religious Exploration group which has been meeting since January at UUP, and explore–with words or in the silent sanctuary of your heart–considerations about your particular spiritual grounding and its connection to our community. We seek to risk to know and be known. This service will include brief periods of meditation and participation.

Living and Dying Well
Worship Leader: Joyce Tischler
Most people would prefer to avoid the subject of death. Yet, some would argue that death is not an enemy to be feared, but rather, an important aspect of one’s life, to be understood and appreciated. We do not honor life when we fail to see that mortality is what gives our humanity its precious quality. Death is a vital aspect of life, giving it a deeper flavor. When consistently practiced, the values and principles of Unitarian Universalism will guide us not only to live well, but to die well. Don’t miss this participatory service.
