Acceptance and Encouragement: Probing the UU Principles

Principle # 3 of our seven Unitarian Universalist Principles reads as follows:

“Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations”

Is this so general as to be meaningless? Hardly. The Unitarian Universalist Principles are signposts pointing us toward a profound appreciation of what it means to be UU. The Principles demand much of us. Our inherent differences require us to practice acceptance of each other and to open our congregation to greater diversity. Yet, what do we mean by “acceptance” and “encouragement to spiritual growth?” Come. Delve deeply. Help each other to understand how this Principle plays out in our lives. (This is a participatory service)

People all over Petaluma, perhaps even our neighbors, are struggling to make ends meet. We have opportunities each and every day to reach out to those less fortunate. Elece Hempel, Executive Director of Petaluma People Services, will share about her experience working at PPSC. PPSC is dedicated to improving the social and economic health of our community by providing programs that strengthen the dignity and self-sufficiency of the individual.

On the 83rd anniversary of the birth of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we will explore the terrain of love and power, considering such simple questions as what they have to do with justice and what is the proper role for religion in politics.

After worship, we’ll continue the conversation by introducing the work of the UUP Immigration Task Force.

Dance Church
Our monthly (third Sunday) dance- and movement-centered service, featuring a clear and open wood floor, music, and mostly free-form dance, for those who seek to find the spirit in dance, and want to experience that in community with others. We’ll begin with some warm-ups, a basic ritual dance, and then just play music and invite all to dance.

January 8th, 2012, will mark the 10th anniversary of that service and a decade full of the highs and lows of founding a vital spiritual community. Whether you have been part of this community for years or are just arriving, come celebrate the creation and growth of the first ten years and join in beginning the next chapter in the life of UUP.
